When is it appropriate to move your website to a VPS server?

A question that is asked quite a lot by website owners.

To put it another way, is shared hosting no longer good for my website?

This can be examined from several aspects and asked:

1. Has the number of visitors to my website increased recently?

2. Has my website become slow recently?

3. Does my website hosting control panel have a notification about maximum resource utilization?

4. Does my hosting company recommend that I switch to a VPS server?

5. Is there any expectation of growth in the site and the number of visitors to it in the near future?

6. Does the site sometimes receive browser errors due to lack of resources?

If you answered yes to at least 2 of the above questions, then you are on your way to hosting your website on a private server / VPS server.

How will hosting on a VPS server help my website?

  • First, it’s a private hosting environment for your website, which means that all sorts of other websites’ ailments won’t affect you. You’ll be living in a private villa and not in a shared residential building, so the neighbors’ garbage won’t bother you, only your own.
  • Another thing is the amount of resources that will be allocated from the entire server to your website and operating system. Whatever your website consumes in terms of RAM and CPU will be allocated exclusively to it.
  • Is your website growing? Is the number of visitors increasing? A VPS server will allow you to quickly increase resources to the level of a website with hundreds of thousands of visitors per day!
  • Backups? The easiest way to back up a VPS server is to back up the entire server, including the operating system and settings, to a single file, which is amazing.
  • Also, the number of websites you can store on a virtual server is unlimited. (Depending on server resources such as processor memory and volume)

I decided to move my website to a VPS server, what’s the next step?

  • Switching from a shared server to a VPS server should be easy and fast.
  • It is important to consult with a web hosting company who will give you a recommendation regarding the desired server configuration.
  • Ultimately, it’s a matter of trial and error, but the more details and statistics you share about your site, the more likely the hosting company will match you with a server with the right amount of resources for your site.
  • After setting up a virtual server (VPS), we perform a full backup of the website and database.
  • A professional company like Host Center will perform the backup and migration for you, free of charge and without any downtime.

My website has moved to a virtual server – VPS – what about server maintenance?

Indeed, maintaining a virtual private server is a bit more complex than hosting a website on a shared server that is well maintained by the hosting company.

But the demon isn’t that bad.

There are companies that provide additional services for server management.

Host Center includes server management on all of its servers as part of the basic virtual server service.

My server is down, what do I do?

First, you need to calm down. Stress won’t help you, it will only make the matter more dramatic than it really is.

The recommended actions for a downed server are:

  1. Check if you have access to the Cpanel control panel – if so, try to check which service is not working, if there is one, restart that service.
  2. If you don’t have access to the control panel, restart the server. Host Center allows access to reboot the server even if the server is down.
  3. In most cases, restarting the server solves the problem, but not always.
  4. If you were unable to resolve the problem yourself, contact the hosting company, they will help you.
  5. You can always restore the server or files to a day or a few days before the problem.
  • In conclusion, before you switch to a private server, it is recommended that you consult with a professional server hosting company and obtain the credentials of their server person.
  • Host Center will be able to provide you with advice and assistance on this matter at any time.
  • Good luck to everyone.
